College Basketball is Dying
Quote from Russ Hanson on October 19, 2024, 9:40 pmI did not think I would ever feel this way but with the OPEN transfer portals and NIL there is no more Team feeling. They will continue to play the game but the magic is gone.

Quote from Grouchos on October 23, 2024, 12:39 pmYou can't turn the clock back. First, the scholarship wasn't enough, so it became a "full scholarship." Okay. Then the schools & the greedy school presidents were ripping them off so they got NIL money. Okay. That wasn't enough. In no particular order it was time to organize a union, time to get paid by the schools directly, and, time for players out of the game for over 20 years to sue.
So now we have anarchy and chaos. Likely best solution? Eliminate NIL and all the NIL collectives. Schools/boosters pay the kids but their is a cap per player. Texas A&M football guarantees each offensive lineman $75,000-that's ridiculous. That way, kids will go back to determining where they want to go to school by actually thinking about which coach can develop them, what they like about the program, etc., etc.
Of course, the above will likely never happen.
Oh, and the portal? Well, first off, no freshmen should be allowed to transfer. They are homesick, they have never had to sit before, most of them have never had to compete before. If they do that, let them transfer without having to sit out a year. Sophs & juniors can transfer but have to sit a year at their new school as redshirts. Grad transfers shouldn't be able to play anymore. They should be through. If not, they have to stay at the school they have been at to pursue their masters.
Again, none of the above will happen.
What is happening? Well, you may have missed it but Clemson announced yesterday that they would begin charging every student an additional $150-which will go to athletics. That's right, nobody thinks about the consequences of all this bs. The schools are okay with taking "a hit" to a point-because they have all this money-but they are going to want to raise more revenue. On the horizon will be a "fall-out" however. The big schools, since they now have to pay the athletes all this money are not going to want to keep sharing basketball revenue from television & conference tv deals with the Winthrops & Northern Illinois' of the world. So, I do expect to see fewer DI programs going forward. That will also change the NCAA tournament in the future-which I expect will let everybody in. Why not? They already reward a team that gets hot at the end of the season and wins their conference tournament instead of giving the automatic bid to a team that had the best record over something like 18 conference games-body of work means nothing. So, they will "cheapen" the tournament by having everybody make it-which they feel will also increase fan interest while coaches hope it will lead to them getting more time to turn a program around before being fired.
No my friends, the NCAA, as an institution, is already on that slippery slope and college basketball is sliding down with it.
That's why, as was suggested above, my interest in the game has lessened considerably. However, conversely, or, maybe because I need something to fill the void, I totally love fantasy college basketball. I just pick a team and we play. No bs to deal with.
For me, it's all about the stats; not the humans...

Too late, the genie is out of the bottle
If the NCAA had any actual adults in charge they may have been able to do that but instead we got chaos
The NCAA is begging Congress to do their job for them but thast would be an even worse disaster in my view
We got here due to the incompetence of the NCAA and I really don't see a workable solution on the horizon, yet
